What a School Carnival Teaches About Formation

I stood in line for thirty minutes for snow cones. It was worth it. Not because of the snow cones, but because of everything happening around them. Formation is not something that only happens in structured environments or formal teaching. It happens in ordinary moments like this, over and over again, long before anyone ever talks about leadership or flourishing.

The children at that carnival were being formed in ways that are easy to overlook, learning how to interact, how to include others, how to handle winning and losing, how to wait their turn. What we build into our children early, often quietly and without much attention, becomes what they carry later when life requires something of them. Formation is not preparation for flourishing. Formation is already flourishing in motion, or its absence.
